CARING FOR YOUR ARTWORK

Graphite pencil drawings can last a lifetime, however it is a delicate medium and needs to be cared for.

It is important to note that I do not spray my drawings with fixative. This means that the drawing is at risk to smudging if you come into contact with it. I highly recommend leaving the drawing wrapped in the paper until it is ready to be framed. If you choose to handle the drawing, make sure your hands are clean.

I will always use a professional framer to frame my original pieces. This is certainly a more costly option than doing it yourself, but the best framers are masters of their craft and will always enhance the impact of my drawings. Once under glass your pencil drawing will be protected. Graphite is not a medium that is affected by static.

I highly recommend framing your drawing with art glass. It is more expensive than standard glass but it is non reflective and allows you to see the art clearly.

Avoid hanging your drawing in areas of high humidity or above a radiator. Although graphite doesn't necessarily fade with sunlight, it does reflect, so consider the natural and artificial lighting of the room you are going to hang in.

I recommend applying the same standards of care to a limited edition print. Obviously, a print is not at risk of smudging, but do minimise the handling of it until it's under glass.
